A combination of hits and misses
The attentive staff made my stay enjoyable, providing helpful recommendations and even packing a lunch for my early departure! The private onsen was a serene escape after long days of exploration.
The onsen’s temperature could have been warmer, and I found the breakfast selection a bit lacking in variety, with the Japanese option outshining the Western.

We had a fantastic time enjoying the beautiful onsen and the delicious breakfast with local ingredients. The relaxing public bath was a great way to unwind after a long day of exploring. The only thing we wished for was a few more soft lights in the room to create a cozy atmosphere—definitely pack some warm socks for roaming around! 😊

We had a fantastic time at this ryokan! The outdoor onsen was such a highlight, especially being able to reserve it for our family in the evenings. The meals were delicious, and we especially loved the traditional breakfast. The cute atmosphere.
For dads, it would be great to have extra help getting up from the futon beds. Those low beds are tough after a long day! A colder water tap for the hot onsen would also be a fantastic addition.

The stay at this charming ryokan was delightful. Enjoying the delicious kaiseki dinner created a memorable dining experience, and the outdoor onsen, especially when used privately, was the highlight at the end of my day. However, reaching the outdoor onsen involved some effort after getting dressed again, and the showers being limited to the indoor facility was a bit inconvenient. Despite the slight hassle, the attentiveness of the staff, who prepared a packed lunch for my early departure, was a thoughtful touch.

The Yudanaka Tawaraya Ryokan offers an exceptional stay with incredibly spacious accommodations featuring a Japanese-Style Superior Room, great onsen facilities both indoors and outdoors, and outstanding service from the attentive staff. The staff prepared a thoughtful packed lunch for my early departure, which was greatly appreciated.
Heating and washing can be a bit complicated.

Big hype, little substance
The family-run ryokan is cozy, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Meals were okay, but I've had better elsewhere. The onsen experience was nice, but I've visited cleans and cooler spots in my travels. While the service was attentive, I expected more from a place with such rave reviews.

We had an incredible time at this traditional ryokan with friends! The outdoor onsen was our favorite way to unwind after exploring Shibu Onsen and hitting the nearby slopes. The cozy atmosphere and delicious traditional meals made our stay memorable. Note that you need to walk uphill from the station, but it's well worth it, and the staff was super friendly.
The only downside was that showers are available only in the indoor onsen, so it took a bit more effort to reach the outdoor one, especially after dressing up again.

Breakfast was absolutely dreamy—nothing like starting your day with those delicious local flavors! The outdoor onsen? Pure bliss, especially with the serene winter backdrop. Plus, the staff's hospitality pulled it all together, making our stay truly unforgettable.
Getting to Yudanaka can feel like a trek, especially since the only train is the Nagano Dentetsu line which doesn't take JR Pass.

A delightful onsen escape
Our stay was truly rejuvenating! The outdoor onsen was a highlight, allowing us to reserve private time under the stars. The traditional kaiseki dinner was both delicious and beautifully presented, offering a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine. The family running the ryokan were exceptionally kind and always ready to help with any needs. However, the room felt a bit chilly in January, but the cozy blankets did the trick.

Strongly recommend for a city break
Cozy room, delicious breakfast, and the tranquil onsen facilities made my stay exceptional during my two nights. everything was spotlessly clean, and the staff was incredibly friendly, just a 5-minute walk from the train station to make exploring easy.
The only downside was that showers are available only in the indoor onsen, which required some extra effort after dressing up again.
